Stewart so close to winning Glenmuir WPGA title
Gillian Stewart finished runner-up in the WPGA’s flagship event, the Glenmuir WPGA Championship, over the Moortown course in Leeds.
Gillian, who now coaches from her Inverness base, had a pair of 76’s for 152 which was one stroke too many. Tracey Loveys (Bigbury) was the winner with a total of one over par 151. Joanne Pritchard from Pontypool, Wales was third on 154 with 73 and 81.
Play was impossible on day one of the Championship due to torrential rain making the course unplayabe so the scheduled 36 holes had to be played on day two. Tracey Loveys and Joanne Pritchard lead at lunchtime with 73s. However in the afternoon Pritchard fell away early on and it was Stewart who became the main challenger to Loveys. In the end Loveys holed a 15 foot birdie putt on the last green to take the title outright when a play off looked a likely outcome.
Stewart was pleased with her performance however, “I struck the ball really nicely and hit 30 out of 36 greens in regulation figures. In the end I just had a couple of putts too many”
